What You're Signing Up For
This diploma programme builds on foundational ceramics experience to further develop your studio methods, creative vision, project management, and understanding of contemporary practice in ceramics. You'll work in New Zealand's largest ceramics studio or learn by distance with in-person workshops. The programme combines technical mastery, visual language development, historical and cultural context (including Māori perspectives), and professional practice, preparing you for independent studio work, exhibitions, or further study such as the Bachelor of Visual Arts.
Course Content
- Studio Methods 3: Advanced techniques in ceramic art and material exploration
- Studio Methods 4: Experimental studio works and independent practice
- Studio Arts 1: Construction, finishing and firing of ceramic objects
- Studio Arts 2: Developing and exhibiting a collection of independent work
- Visual Language 2: Research and critical analysis of visual images and objects specific to ceramics
- Drawing 2: Extension of drawing skills for problem-solving and concept development
- Context and Professional Practice: Discussing studio work in historical and cultural context, including Aotearoa
- Ceramic Finishing: Glaze research, application methods and new ceramic technologies
What you need to know first
New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5) - Ceramics or equivalent qualification
Portfolio of artwork and working processes
For applicants under 20, Level 5 qualification or equivalent skills and knowledge
For applicants over 20, there are no minimum academic entry requirements
If English is not your first language: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5), or equivalent English language proficiency
