Core skills this course teaches

Develop studio ceramics skills
Apply core ceramics skills, including forming, firing, glazing, and finishing techniques, in accordance with given project briefs.

Articulate conceptual and historical context
Discuss and apply an understanding of ceramics history and theory, as well as broader art and craft perspectives, including local indigenous culture.

Demonstrate critical and creative thinking
Research, evaluate, and develop creative projects, employing problem-solving, critical analysis, and reflective practice.
What You're Signing Up For
This diploma emphasises exploration and experimentation in ceramics. Students develop individual projects that explore ceramics as a creative medium, building skills in studio methods, glaze techniques, art history, drawing, and the theoretical contexts surrounding fine arts and crafts. Delivered onsite and at partner studios across New Zealand, the programme equips graduates for creative careers, personal practice, or further study in visual arts.
Course Content
- Studio Methods 1 and 2: Core ceramics studio skills, idea transfer to clay, material exploration and technical research.
- Ceramic Arts 1 and 2: Extending technical skills and knowledge in ceramics, developing concepts in functional and non-functional objects.
- Visual Language 1: Familiarisation with language of art/design, evaluating visual/oral culture, critique and theory.
- Drawing 1: Technical and observational drawing skills development for art and design practice.
- Art/Craft Theory and History 1: Art history in local and global context, including indigenous perspectives.
- Glaze Practical 1: Ceramic glaze formulation, recipes, studio testing and finishing methods.
- Research methods relevant to studio practice.
- Portfolio development and presentation.
What you need to know first
For applicants under 20: Level 3 qualification in a related field OR NCEA Level 3 (including specified literacy and numeracy credits), or equivalent academic achievement.
Special entry may be possible for those who provide evidence of their ability to succeed.
Applicants over 20: No minimum academic prerequisites, but will be assessed for readiness.
Portfolio of artwork and supporting documents required if programme is over-subscribed.
English language requirements: NZ University Entrance OR Academic IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0), or other approved test.
