What You're Signing Up For
This research-focused honours programme is designed for those passionate about art who wish to extend their undergraduate experience. Students will develop their studio practice and theoretical research, supported by experienced staff and a vibrant creative community. The programme emphasises critical engagement, conceptual development, and culminates in an exhibition and a substantial research paper. Graduates will be well-prepared for higher-level roles in the arts sector or for further postgraduate study.
Course Content
- Studio Project Part One (Semester One, Level 8, 60 credits)
- Studio Project Part Two (Semester Two, Level 8, 60 credits)
- Production of a proposal-based body of studio work
- Extended essay (conceptual research paper) contextualising studio work (draft 3,000 words in S1, final 5,000 words in S2)
- Regular studio critiques and seminars
- Supervision by studio and theory supervisors
- Access to specialist workshop facilities (ceramics, electronic arts, jewellery & metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, design)
- Participation in public seminar and postgraduate workshop weekly
- Presentation opportunities via exhibition spaces in Dunedin
What you need to know first
A Bachelor of Visual Arts (Level 7) or equivalent bachelor's degree with an overall grade of B (70%) or higher in final year studio and essay papers
Annotated portfolio, CV, and project proposal required
Admission may include an interview and is subject to approval by the Postgraduate Coordinator or Admissions Committee
International students individually assessed for readiness
