What You're Signing Up For
Based in Te Tauihu at NMIT's Creative Industries building in Nelson, this Bachelor of Arts and Media programme develops broad knowledge and practical and conceptual skills in arts and design, including painting, graphic design, animation, photography, digital video, and illustration. The three-year full-time degree combines technical excellence with creative development and professional practice culminating in a major final year project and exhibition. Students benefit from a rich creative environment influenced by local natural landscapes and a legacy of practicing artists. Entry requires NCEA Level 3 University Entrance or equivalent including subjects related to Visual Arts or Technology, and a creative portfolio. The programme is offered full or part time with intakes in February and July.
Course Content
- Year 1: Lens-based media, graphic design, object design, image-making and communication, critical studies.
- Year 2: Advanced critical design thinking and professional practice, specialising in lens-based media, object design, graphic design and image studio.
- Year 3: Major individual project and end-of-year Bachelor of Arts and Media exhibition.
What you need to know first
University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) including 14 credits at Level 3 in three approved subjects related to Visual Art, Technology, Media Studies, Drama, English, History, Social Sciences or Art History.
Literacy requirement: 10 credits at Level 2 or above.
Numeracy requirement: 10 credits at Level 1 or above.
Qualification at NZQF Level 4 or above in related discipline or recognized equivalent (e.g. International Baccalaureate).
English language proficiency: IELTS 6.0 Academic with no lower than 5.5 in each band or equivalent.
Computer literacy sufficient for study level.
Creative portfolio submission demonstrating technical and conceptual skills.
