Produce Māori artworks informed by tradition
Students will be able to create Māori art works informed by an understanding of design and concepts drawn from traditional narratives such as mōteatea, waiata, kapahaka, and informed by te reo Māori me ona tikanga.

Demonstrate safe and effective art creation processes
Students will demonstrate the ability to use safe and effective techniques and processes in the creation of Māori artworks.

Establish strong academic foundations for degree study
Graduates will have an academic base sufficient to enable direct entry to degree-level study in Māori Visual Arts.
What You're Signing Up For
Ka Tipu te Whaihanga | NZ Certificate in Ngā Toi (Level 4) is a unique, kaupapa and wānanga based programme focused on developing creativity and skill in Māori art practice and methods. Students are taught by leading Māori art specialists and have access to traditional and contemporary art forms. The programme interweaves te ao Māori (the Māori world view), traditional narratives, and tikanga throughout art creation. Graduates gain foundational artistic abilities and cultural grounding, with pathways to degree-level study or employment in arts contexts.

What you need to know first
Interview with Principal Tutor(s)
Basic art portfolio with drawings or samples
Minimum of 10 credits NCEA Level 1 from any Literacy subfield or domain (in English or te reo Māori) OR
Pass in NCEA Level 1 English and/or te reo Māori OR
Equivalent or higher NQF qualification OR
Mature students (over 20) with life skills and/or work experience considered
Demonstrated fluency in te reo Māori or English appropriate for academic success
