What You're Signing Up For

This practice-led and student-centered programme enables students to develop skills in a variety of visual art forms, such as painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture, and moving-image. The curriculum focuses on contemporary art trends, mātauranga Māori, collaborative practice, and the production of creative works. Students can customise their studies via majors, minors, and elective options, allowing a tailored learning experience. Graduates gain a sound understanding of the art sector and are equipped for further study or a variety of creative careers.

  • Core courses in fundamental visual arts principles and processes
  • Studio-based learning in painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture, and moving image
  • Integrated Visual Arts Practices (capstone/practice-based project)
  • Professional Contexts course (preparing for art industry career)
  • Option to major in Painting, Printmaking and Drawing OR Photography, Sculpture and Moving-image
  • Option to include minors and elective courses from art/design or other AUT degrees
  • Incorporation of mātauranga Māori into art practice
  • Collaborative and independent art-making
  • Critical art theory and contemporary trends

University Entrance (NCEA Level 3 or equivalent New Zealand entry)

For international students: equivalent overseas secondary education

IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher, or equivalent English proficiency
