What You're Signing Up For
The Early Childhood Education (ECE) (Level 3) programme at Wintec is designed for secondary school students interested in a career in early childhood education. Over 31 weeks, students attend classes once a week to learn the value of play, relationships, safe practices, child development and learning, and the New Zealand early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki. Completion of the course provides 27 credits towards NCEA Levels 2 and 3. The programme prepares students for further study in ECE and gives them an introduction to careers in early childhood settings.

- Explaining the relevance of the NZ Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whāriki
- Describing patterns of development and learning for children
- Developing respectful, reciprocal, and responsive relationships with children in an ECE service
- Describing the value of play and creating resources for children’s learning and development
- Safe practices and creating safe environments in ECE services
- Understanding diverse whanau/families and using effective communication strategies
- Knowledge of ethical responsibility in early childhood practice
