What You're Signing Up For

The Master of Hōaka Pounamu equips teachers, education leaders, and researchers with enhanced knowledge and practice in te reo Māori and language immersion pedagogy. It combines advanced language training, curriculum development, immersive learning experiences, and assessment strategies aimed at revitalising te reo Māori in Aotearoa classrooms. The degree includes compulsory and elective courses, noho marae, and full-immersion classes, supporting professional advancement in mainstream, bilingual, and immersion education.

Course Content

  • Compulsory courses: Te Tiriti o Waitangi i te Ao Mātauranga, Whakarauora Reo, Mātauranga Māori Hei Marautanga, Tikanga/Rautaki Whakaako Reo
  • Elective options in diverse areas such as teaching diverse learners and digital tools in education
  • Full-immersion reo classes and noho marae experiences
  • Lesson and assessment planning for language learners
  • Study of international models for first and second language teaching practices

What you need to know first

Aotearoa teaching degree

Bachelor's degree with a major in Education or related subject, with at least a B Grade Average

Three-year diploma in Early Childhood, Primary, or Secondary Teaching

Equivalent study from other approved degrees

Assessment hui with Programme Coordinator to determine te reo Māori fluency

UC English language requirements for non-first-language English speakers
