Gain comprehensive understanding of teaching practice, educational theory, curriculum design, and learner-centred approaches.

Complete at least 80 days of professional placements in schools to apply learning in real-world teaching environments.

Develop skills in bicultural practices and understanding of te reo Māori and its application in New Zealand classrooms.
What You're Signing Up For
The Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning gives graduates the opportunity to develop knowledge of teaching, learners, and curriculum, gain professional practice in schools, and enter the teaching profession in Aotearoa New Zealand. It hones communication, critical thinking, planning and design for learning, and bicultural competence. Students can study either primary or secondary pathways, including specialist teaching subjects, and complete significant professional practice placements.

- Bicultural competence and te reo Māori practice
- Teaching Professional Practice placements
- Literacy and mathematics for primary school teaching
- Curriculum studies in health, PE, arts, science, technology, languages and social sciences
- Secondary teaching: curriculum, pedagogy, assessment for subject specialisms (eg, English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, etc.)
- Contemporary developments in education
- Flexible study options (on-campus or distance for primary pathway)
- On-site Intensive induction for distance students
What you need to know first
An Aotearoa New Zealand bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification
Alternate Entry Pathway for those with relevant work experience in technology and/or te reo Māori (Secondary pathway)
Mathematics capability required for Primary pathway
Academic ability, communication skills, and personal qualities
Police check, referees' reports, and an interview
Online literacy and numeracy assessments
English language proficiency as per UC and Teaching Council requirements
