Understanding key early childhood learning theories
Students will understand socio-cultural theories of learning and development to support holistic child development.

Applying multicultural and bicultural practices
Students will learn to incorporate multiculturalism, family diversity, and Te Whāriki curriculum, including te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, in planning and providing learning experiences.

Providing a culturally inclusive environment
Students will contribute to fostering health, wellbeing, and care of infants, toddlers and young children in early childhood environments.
What You're Signing Up For
The UCOL New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) provides learners with knowledge and skills to work in early childhood education settings caring for young children. Students gain understanding of socio-cultural learning theories, multicultural and bicultural practices, ethical principles, and legislative frameworks guiding early childhood education. The course includes 60 hours of practical experience in early childhood settings organized by UCOL. Delivery is blended with on-site and online components. The qualification enables entry into various early childhood educator roles and progression to Bachelor of Teaching (ECE).
Course Content
- Learning and Development Theories (15 credits): Includes concepts of Ako, neuroscience significance, attachment relationships, socio-cultural theories, holistic development, wellbeing models, health, safety, care and nutrition requirements.
- Culture and Identity (15 credits): Communication and interaction with diverse cultural groups within New Zealand.
- Professional and Ethical Principles and Practices (15 credits): Understanding legislation, ethical practice and impact on early childhood education.
- Early Childhood Practicum (15 credits): 60 hours of supervised practical experience within an early childhood setting.
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 2 or New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 3) or equivalent academic achievement or Executive Dean discretion
Successful background check from New Zealand Police Licensing and Vetting Agency
For international students: IELTS Academic 5.5 with no band lower than 5 or equivalent
