This Master of Teaching Early Childhood Education enables those with a prior degree to transition into early childhood teaching at a professional level. The programme combines academic coursework in early childhood pedagogy, curriculum, practitioner research, and professional practice with over 14 weeks of hands-on placements in early childhood centres. Graduates are equipped to become registered teachers and leaders equipped to meet challenges and opportunities in Aotearoa's ECE sector.

  • Rangahau Mātanga Mātauranga Kōhungahunga: Practitioner Research in Early Childhood Education Settings

What you need to know first

Two satisfactory character references (not from family, friends or work colleagues) as per NZTC Good Character and Fit to be a Teacher Policy 2007.

Two forms of identity.

Satisfactory participation in an entry (online) interview, including literacy and numeracy competency.

Safety check under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.

Police vetting: consent form for checking record of convictions.

Applicants with convictions interviewed by Associate Dean Education.

Bachelor’s degree at level 7 (minimum 360 credits), Bachelor Honours at level 8 (min. 480 credits), or Master’s degree at level 9 (min. 240 credits).

B average or above in prior study.

International: NZQA IQA report required for overseas qualifications.

Pass a literacy and numeracy test (Level 6 of National Adult Literacy and Numeracy tool for adults).

English language proficiency: IELTS Academic score of 7.0 (all bands) or PTE (Academic) score of 65 (all bands), or recognised equivalent as per Teaching Council of New Zealand.
