Students will develop hands-on teaching skills and practical methods for effectively educating young children in various early childhood settings.

Learners will implement culturally responsive teaching practices incorporating Māori and Pasifika worldviews, fostering an inclusive learning environment.

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) (Level 7) programme at Manukau Institute of Technology prepares students for a professional career in early childhood education. It provides significant hands-on experience in early childhood settings, incorporating flexible study options to accommodate lifestyle and work commitments. The programme includes extensive practical placements and prepares graduates for provisional practicing certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Students also develop cultural teaching practices including Māori and Pasifika worldviews. The programme consists of 360 credits over 3 years full-time (or up to 6 years part-time).

Be 17 years or older at programme start
Meet English Language Competency requirements as per Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand or NZQA standards
Satisfy Children’s Act 2014 criteria prior to entry
Complete selection interview by registered teachers
Pass literacy and numeracy diagnostic tests
Submission of educational and language proficiency evidence
Completion of criminal vetting and health declarations
Graduates will reflect on and develop their professional teacher identity and engage in ongoing self-reflective inquiry to improve their teaching practice.
