What You're Signing Up For

AUT’s Master of Teaching and Learning is a professional master’s degree for those with a bachelor’s degree who wish to qualify as early childhood or primary/intermediate teachers in New Zealand. This intensive 180-point programme covers education theory, curriculum, and social justice, alongside a substantial practicum placement component and research project. Students can specialise in early childhood or primary teaching and, upon completion, are eligible to apply for provisional registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.

  • Pedagogical Leadership and the Principles of Te Whāriki (ECE stream)
  • Strands of Te Whāriki: Weaving People, Places and Things (ECE stream)
  • Teaching for Social Justice
  • Critical Reflection on Professional Practice
  • Becoming/Being an Adaptive Teacher (ECE and Primary variants)
  • Design for Learning (Primary stream)
  • Integrated Curriculum in the Primary/Intermediate Classroom (Primary stream)
  • Practicum placements (minimum 80 days)
  • Research course (30-points)

What you need to know first

Bachelor’s degree with a B+ grade average or higher in level 7 courses

Some experience with children aged 0–5 (ECE) or 5–12 (primary/intermediate) is recommended

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programme entry form

Pass literacy and numeracy assessments

Meet Teaching Council English language requirements

Face-to-face or online interview

Good character and fitness as stipulated by Teaching Council policy

Police vetting and satisfactory references

Meet Children’s Act 2014 safety check requirements
