Classroom experience
Complete at least 16 weeks of practicum placements under supervision in two secondary schools to build teaching confidence and experience.

Apply research-based teaching theory in real classroom settings, including unit planning, assessment, and meeting diverse learning needs.
What You're Signing Up For
The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching prepares graduates to teach in New Zealand secondary schools. The programme combines campus-based coursework with at least 16 weeks of practicum teaching placements, building practical experience in subject teaching, classroom management, assessment, and inclusive teaching. Graduates are eligible to seek teacher registration and employment in secondary education.

What you need to know first
A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a subject relevant to secondary teaching in New Zealand.
At least one appropriate 300-level course in the intended senior teaching subject area and one 200-level course in the junior area.
Literacy and numeracy assessment.
Meet English language competency requirements (Teaching Council of Aotearoa NZ).
Interview assessing suitability for teaching.
Meet 'good character and fitness' criteria (Teaching Council registration).
Police vetting and safety check requirements (Children’s Act 2014).
Satisfactory references.
