Develop technical and safety skills for outdoor activities
Students will gain competence in safely participating in and leading a variety of land and water-based outdoor adventures, applying best practices for personal safety and group management.

Apply kaitiakitanga and local tikanga
Graduates will demonstrate understanding and application of environmental responsibility (kaitiakitanga) and cultural protocols (tikanga/kawa) in outdoor settings.

Plan and prepare for outdoor expeditions
Students will learn to plan, organize, and evaluate the logistics and safety considerations for successful outdoor pursuits.
What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (Level 3) is a hands-on programme designed to equip students with the practical skills, safety awareness, and environmental stewardship needed for careers in outdoor recreation. You will participate in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits across land and water environments, learning key principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), personal safety, navigation, and self-management, with an emphasis on practical experience, teamwork, and communication. Learning involves face-to-face classes, online self-paced modules, and practical field trips, including camping and various adventure activities.
Course Content
- Water-based activities: paddle boarding, snorkelling, sea kayaking, river crossing, surfing
- Land-based activities: mountain biking, tramping, navigation, caving, abseiling
- Principles of kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship)
- Local tikanga and kawa (cultural practices and protocols)
- Preparation and planning for outdoor activities
- Physical fitness development
- Communication and self-management skills
- Field trips and overnight camping
- Practical outdoor skill assignments
What you need to know first
Minimum age 16 years
NCEA Level 1 or recognized equivalent and evidence of literacy sufficient to study at this level
Interest in the field and potential to succeed
For discretionary entrance: Evidence of potential to succeed, assessed by programme manager
For non-native English speakers: IELTS 5.0 academic band, no less than 5.0 in any band, or equivalent
