Plan and lead abseiling activities (Level 4)
Carry out at least 10 personal abseils at a minimum of three sites, set up own abseil systems, and lead or assist groups for at least five days.

Plan and lead rock climbing activities (Level 4)
Complete at least 20 single-pitch top-rope climbs, including rescue skills, and assist or co-lead groups at indoor or outdoor venues, climbing to Grade 14.

Instruct single-pitch rock climbing (Level 5 Instruction)
Accumulate at least 40 days of climbing experience, including personal climbing, instructing rock climbing and abseiling, and demonstrate leadership and teaching skills at different venues and rock types, including leading at Grade 15.
What You're Signing Up For
This elective is designed for professionals in outdoor recreation who wish to enhance their skills in abseiling and rock climbing leadership. The modules provide both technical and leadership training, including personal skill development, group management, rescue skills, and instructional techniques. Available at NZQA Level 4 (abseiling and rock climbing) and Level 5 (rock climbing instruction), participants are trained, observed, and assessed both in the workplace and online.

- Fundamentals module (core skills)
- Abseiling (Level 4): personal abseiling, site setup, leading abseiling groups
- Rock Climbing (Level 4): top rope climbing, rescue skills, leading climbing groups
- Rock Climbing (Level 5 Instruction): instructing climbing skills, instructional experience, advanced lead climbing
- Workplace-based training and assessment
- Online assessment
- Experience in group management and leadership
