What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4) offered by Manukau Institute of Technology is a full-time programme designed for 17 teaching weeks at MIT Ōtara. It equips students with essential knowledge and practical skills in anatomy, exercise programming, nutrition, and professional practice. The qualification opens pathways to further study and employment in various exercise-related fields. The programme includes assessment and facilitation of exercise programmes, understanding nutrition for healthy lifestyles, and applying business and cultural competencies in professional practice. Entry requires NCEA level 1 or equivalent, with English proficiency standards. The course includes a blend of classroom, practical, and work experience components to prepare students for the workforce or further study.
Course Content
- Human anatomy and physiology: basic concepts in context of exercise programmes.
- Exercise programming: assessing fitness, adapting and delivering exercise programmes, applying Māori Health Model.
- Nutrition and lifestyle: basic nutrition principles for exercise and healthy lifestyles, healthy lifestyle behaviour change.
- Exercise professional practice: cultural competency using Manaakitanga, Tūturutanga, Tūhonotanga principles; business tools for exercise professionals; scope of practice in NZ context.

40 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits
New Zealand Certificate in Sport, Recreation and Exercise (Multisector) Level 3
A relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2
Recognised equivalent
English proficiency: IELTS General 5.5 (no band below 5) or equivalent
