What You're Signing Up For
The NZ Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (Level 3) at Eastern Institute of Technology is a practical, full-time programme aimed at those passionate about outdoor adventure and seeking a career in the outdoors. The course provides field trips and a mix of land- and water-based activities, including tramping, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and overnight camping. Students will learn survival and navigation skills, build their own shelter, and follow principles of safety and environmental protection (kaitiakitanga). Graduates will be prepared for entry-level roles in adventure tourism, search and rescue, the NZ Defence Force, and conservation, or may continue to advanced outdoor or exercise qualifications.

- Local tikanga and kawa
- Kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship)
- Preparing and planning outdoor activities
- Self-management
- Physical fitness
- Water-based activities: kayaking, rafting, paddle boarding, snorkelling
- Land-based activities: mountain biking, tramping, navigation, rock climbing, DOC work
- Communication skills
- Overnight camping and shelter building
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 1 or equivalent qualification
Minimum age 16 years at start of programme
May require interview
Must be physically able to complete the programme
Must be confident in water and camping outdoors
