Demonstrate technical competence in multiple outdoor activities
Students will be able to safely and proficiently perform a range of outdoor pursuits, applying best practices and technical skills in activities like kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, climbing, and tramping.

Lead and guide groups outdoors
Graduates will be equipped to guide people safely in a variety of outdoor environments, demonstrating effective leadership, risk assessment, planning, and group management skills.

Apply principles of environmental sustainability
Students will practice kaitiakitanga and understand principles of environmental and cultural sustainability relevant to outdoor settings in Aotearoa New Zealand.
What You're Signing Up For
This NZQA Level 4 certificate equips students with the skills and knowledge to guide people safely in a range of outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, tramping and more. Students learn a balance of theory and practice, including technical outdoor competence, planning and logistics, leadership, risk management and environmental sustainability. The programme serves as a pathway to work or further study within the outdoor recreation, education and tourism sectors.

- Leadership concepts, theories and application
- Environment and sustainability
- Kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and hauora in the context of the outdoors
- Technical competency in at least four outdoor pursuits (may include tramping, camping, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling, adventure-based learning, rafting)
- Planning and logistics
- Weather and navigation
- Risk management
- Communication, teamwork, professionalism
- Field trips and applied learning
What you need to know first
NZ Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (Level 3) or NZ Certificate in Assistant Outdoor Leadership (Level 3)
NCEA Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent)
Demonstrated interest in outdoor/adventure education and evidence of potential to succeed (CV, portfolio, interview)
Declaration of good health (no medical, physical or psychological conditions precluding work with vulnerable clients)
Complete required safety checks (interview, referee checks, NZ Police Vetting, Vulnerable Children Act compliance)
