Assess and respond to climbing emergencies
Identify, assess, and appropriately respond to emergencies encountered during rock climbing activities.

Demonstrate personal rock climbing and rescue skills
Show competence in various rock climbing and rescue techniques, including multi-pitch climbs (Level 6).

Plan and lead rock climbing experiences
Develop and review plans for leading groups in low-technical and dynamic environments, executing safe sessions for novice participants.
What You're Signing Up For
This program offers progressive qualifications for those seeking to become certified rock climbing instructors and leaders. Learners can pursue Level 4 (Rock Leader), Level 5 (Rock Instructor), and Level 6 (Advanced Professional Practice) strands, each designed to build competence in technical, leadership, instruction, and emergency response skills for outdoor rock climbing. Delivery includes online modules and in-person training, tailored to the needs of the outdoor recreation and education sector. Pre-requisite experience and skills are required for each level.

What you need to know first
Level 4: At least 20 routes climbed on top rope, 5 days as a co-leader or assistant leader, top rope climbing to Grade 14.
Level 5: At least 40 days rock climbing (20 days personal climbing, 10 days instructing including 5 abseil sessions), at 3 different climbing areas.
Level 6: NZ Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Instruction) Level 5 or equivalent, 80 days climbing (50 personal lead including multi-pitch), 10 days instructing on placed/fixed protection.
