This qualification enables experienced outdoor instructors to become leaders, mentors, and educators for other instructors and guides in the sector. The course equips graduates to implement and review risk and safety systems for outdoor organisations, apply advanced technical and instructional skills in dynamic environments, and educate others to develop professional competencies in outdoor activities.

  • Organisational compliance and safety management plans
  • Leadership theory and practice for supporting instructor development
  • Advanced technical skills in high ropes and other outdoor activities
  • Pedagogical principles and instructional methods
  • Mentoring and verification of guide/instructor competence
  • Preparation and delivery of internal staff training
  • Self-assessment and reflective practice

What you need to know first

Extensive applied instructing experience in dynamic outdoor activities

Logbook or evidence of personal skills and leadership experience

NZ citizenship or permanent residency (or Australian citizen/resident residing in NZ)

Valid group to practice leadership skills with during qualification

Ability to attend in-person and online training sessions

Academic: 40 credits at NCEA Level 2 (including literacy and numeracy requirements) or equivalent; OR relevant study at NZQF Level 2 or higher; OR discretionary entrance upon review
