What You're Signing Up For

This qualification trains individuals for leadership roles in outdoor recreation, particularly sit-on-top kayaking on flat water. Graduates learn to operate independently, emphasising participant safety in low technical yet dynamic environments. The programme covers planning, leading, and reviewing outdoor adventure activities, integrating cultural and environmental responsibilities.

  • Cultural awareness of local iwi, hapū, and culturally significant sites
  • Environmental interpretation (flora, fauna, natural history)
  • Communication, briefing, and debriefing
  • Leadership styles and participant rapport
  • Participant equipment selection
  • Activity planning: weather, client information, equipment, intentions, timing
  • Managing safety, resources, and equipment
  • Responding to participant needs

What you need to know first

At least 40 hours kayaking using a sit-on-top kayak on flat water

At least 5 sessions experience as a co-leader or assistant leader (minimum 1 hour per session)

Ability to lead kayaking activities in appropriate flat or sheltered water environments, such as estuaries, river deltas, lakes, coastal inlets, and swimming pools
