The Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) at the University of Waikato is a flexible, advanced programme designed for graduates seeking to deepen their understanding of social science theory and research methods. Students specialise in a preferred subject area (such as political science, psychology, law, or Māori studies), engage with the latest research techniques, and complete substantial independent research, such as a dissertation or thesis. Graduates develop advanced analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, preparing them for leadership roles in diverse fields or doctoral study.
Course Content
- Advanced study in chosen subject area within social sciences
- Research methods (e.g., ALPSS500 Academic & Professional Research & Writing)
- Coursework papers (at least 60 points in specialist subject, 45 points from List A)
- Elective papers from social sciences or related fields
- Independent research/dissertation/thesis (from Research list)
- Opportunities to engage with industry practitioners and community groups
