What You're Signing Up For

This apprenticeship programme is for experienced field workers and health workers who support people in managing their health and wellbeing. The programme equips apprentices to engage with people, families, and communities to promote autonomy and self-determination regarding health. Apprentices develop skills through on-job, self-directed learning, and are supported by advisors and the online platform Aka Toi. The programme leads to a nationally-recognised qualification and is ideal for allied health staff in community settings.

Course Content

  • Engaging and communicating with people, families, and whānau in social and community services
  • Identifying outcomes and barriers for service users
  • Encouraging social inclusion and participation
  • Contributing to community-level health and wellbeing
  • Applying the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Understanding New Zealand's health and wellbeing aims
  • Demonstrating knowledge of kawa and tikanga in relation to Māori as tangata whenua
  • Self-awareness, reflective practice, self-care, and personal leadership
  • Building professional relationships to improve client outcomes
  • Contributing to professionalism, safety, and quality
  • Gaining and applying in-depth knowledge of specific conditions or issues relevant to role
