What You're Signing Up For
The Certificate in Bicultural Competency (Level 4) is designed for individuals working in public or private entities that seek true engagement as Treaty partners. Learners will gain foundational skills in te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and an in-depth appreciation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi)—including both historical and current socio-political contexts. Through online workshops, you will explore your own place in New Zealand's bicultural context and develop cultural competency to contribute effectively in diverse workplaces. The programme draws on local iwi knowledge and encourages learning through Wānanga and Ako principles, making it relevant and reflective of Aotearoa's bicultural environment.
Course Content
- Te Reo Māori for the Workplace: pronunciation, greetings, workplace correspondence, industry-specific vocabulary, pepeha/mihimihi.
- Tikanga Māori in the Organisation: key concepts, their importance in Te Ao Māori, application in the workplace, reflections on personal behaviours and organisational practices.
- Introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi: historical context, articles and principles, colonisation, regional iwi and hapū contexts, impacts on professional practice.
- Bicultural Competency: self and cultural constructs, analysis of beliefs, celebration and reflection practices, confronting bias, understanding privilege, and encouraging bicultural conversations.

International students are individually assessed for readiness.
All applicants must have sufficient English to study at this level.
International students: Minimum overall academic IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0) or equivalent.
