What You're Signing Up For
This short course is for anyone who would like to develop their cultural competency, their confidence, and understanding of Te Reo and the Titiri o Waitangi. Cultural competency is the ability to work and live with people from any ethnic or cultural background by understanding the value of who you are and where you come from. The workshop covers the history of Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae, cultural competence concepts, Te Tiriti o Waitangi perspectives, Te Reo pronunciation, and creating a framework for Māori engagement. It is delivered over one day, onsite at Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae, with online options if COVID-19 restrictions apply.
Course Content
- Welcome session with pōwhiri/mihi whakatau, introductions, and programme overview
- History of Ōtara and Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae, exploring the wharenui
- Introduction to cultural competency and its applications
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi, colonisation impact, and contemporary perspectives
- Te Reo pronunciation practice including pepeha and waiata
- Pepeha presentation preparation and waiata practice
- Creating a Māori engagement policy framework for organisations
