What You're Signing Up For

Through the Diploma in Health (DipHlth) at the University of Canterbury, students explore the principles and practices of health promotion, disease prevention, and health education, with an emphasis on New Zealand's health context. The diploma is suitable for those looking to enhance their health-related knowledge for career or further study, especially in supporting healthier communities across Aotearoa. Students complete four compulsory courses and four electives drawn from a wide selection covering physical activity, nutrition, Māori and Indigenous development, psychology, and more. The qualification is a pathway to the Bachelor of Health and is structured for flexible completion over one year full-time or up to four years part-time.

  • Compulsory Courses: HLTH101 Introduction to Health Studies, HLTH102 Health Promotion, HLTH105 Communication for Practice, HLTH106 Te Wero – Māori Health Issues and Opportunities
  • Elective options in areas such as: Global Health, Anatomy and Physiology, Health Education, Building Resilience, Cellular Biology and Biochemistry, Statistics, Microbiology, Māori and Indigenous Development, Epidemiology, Health Systems and Policy, Environmental and Occupational Health, Mental Health and Addictions, Human Development, Nutrition, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Focus on health literacy, disease prevention, community health, health systems in New Zealand, and health education strategies
