What You're Signing Up For

The Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts is a three-year degree where students develop their own artistic voice and professional skills for a career on stage, behind the curtain, or in the production studio. Through a blend of technical, theoretical, and professional learning areas, and a choice of two pathways—Music (audio production, composition/songwriting, performance) or Performing Arts (theatre)—students are able to specialise in their area of interest via electives and major projects. Learning is practical, with opportunities for performances, industry projects, and internships, and graduates gain relevant skills for the dynamic creative industries.

Course Content

  • Core modules in music and performing arts craft, critical methods, and professional practice
  • Audio production: audio engineering, mixing, producing, sound design
  • Performance: vocal/instrumental technique, stagecraft, live and studio performance, recording
  • Composition/songwriting: creating music, notation, recording technology, genre studies
  • Performing arts: acting, voice and singing, directing, movement and dance, stage management, set design, lighting, sound
  • Electives: songwriting, performance, sound fundamentals, storytelling, moving image, design, photography, lighting fundamentals, screen fundamentals, creative special topics
  • Industry projects, internships, and work placements
  • Capstone projects and research methods
  • Design Factory NZ module (multi-disciplinary project experience)

What you need to know first

NCEA Level 3: 60 credits at Level 3 or above and 20 credits at Level 2 or above, including 14 credits in three approved subjects, Literacy (10 credits at Level 2 or above), and Numeracy (10 credits at Level 1 or above)

OR a relevant Level 4 qualification

OR evidence of equivalent skills and experience

Music (Composition & Audio Production) pathway: Grade 3 music theory or theory test, portfolio, possible interview/audition

Performance pathway: Grade 6 Practical Trinity College London, Royal School of Music London, Rock School London OR audition

Theatre: portfolio and audition may be required

For non-standard entry: portfolio/audition and/or interview for applicants not meeting standard criteria

English language proficiency: IELTS 6.0 (no band <5.5) or equivalent (for non-native speakers)
