What You're Signing Up For

The New Zealand Certificate in Music (Level 4) is aimed at individuals looking to enhance music performance skills, build confidence, and gain practical experience in the music industry. The qualification covers music theory, one-on-one instrumental tuition, ensemble skills, composition and arrangements, performance, industry awareness, and the use of music technology. Graduates will be equipped to enter the music industry as entry-level musicians, contributing to the cultural, social, and economic life of Aotearoa New Zealand.

  • Contemporary Music in Context: Technological, historical, and socio-cultural influences on music genres
  • Music Performance 1: Performance and reading notation in a contemporary context
  • Music Performance 2: Performance development in contemporary genres
  • Contemporary Music Writing: Composition and arranging tasks using music theory
  • Music Industry Studies: Introduction to the music, audio and related industries
  • Electronic Music Production 1: Using Digital Audio Workstation to create music and sound

What you need to know first

Applicants should be 16 years or older and have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, with at least eight credits at NCEA Level 1 in English.

Mature applicants (20+) considered on work/industry experience.

May require audition covering instrumental/vocal skills, music theory literacy (Grade 1 level).
