Core skills this course teaches

Understand regulatory requirements for Class 2 drivers
Demonstrate knowledge of road user law, fatigue management, work time, and driver logbook requirements (NZQA Unit 24089).

Operate a heavy rigid motor vehicle safely
Apply practical skills to safely operate a heavy rigid (Class 2) motor vehicle, following best practice driving techniques and regulatory standards (NZQA Unit 17574).

Prepare for successful licensing
Prepare for and complete the Class 2 licence learner test, including knowledge of the general road code and specialist questions.
What You're Signing Up For
This short course prepares students to obtain their Class 2 (medium heavy rigid) vehicle licence. The in-class training covers essential knowledge required by NZQA standards, such as road user law, driver fatigue management, and log book record-keeping requirements. Learners also gain practical vehicle operation training according to NZQA unit standards 24089 and 17574. The programme is suitable for aspiring heavy vehicle drivers and is delivered via regional support and optional workshops with online learning components.

What you need to know first
Be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences
Be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level
Be physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes
Have held a full Class 1 licence for a minimum of six months
Hold a current Class 2 learner licence (requires a theory test of 35 general road code and 10 specialist Class 2 questions)
