What You're Signing Up For

This 1.5-day short course is for holders of STCW Certificates of Competency, such as Master, Mate, Deck Officer, Marine Engineer Officer, or Able Seafarer, who require refresher training in fire prevention and fire fighting as per international maritime regulations (Section A-VI/1-2 of STCW 1978, as amended). The course ensures learners can maintain competency in preventing and fighting fires aboard ships using industry-standard techniques and equipment.

Course Content

  • Use of various types of portable extinguishers
  • Extinguishing small fires (electrical, oil, propane)
  • Extinguishing extensive fires with water and nozzles
  • Fighting fire in smoke-filled spaces using self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Using fog applicators, spray nozzles, dry chemical and foam applicators
  • High expansion foam usage onboard a vessel
  • Simulated accommodation/engine room fire scenarios with heavy smoke
  • Complying with STCW refresher training requirements

What you need to know first

Current medical examination certificate issued by an approved General Practitioner (e.g. Seafarers Medical or equivalent)

Evidence of an STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course certificate

A record of on-board training, drills and experience, or equivalent company documentation demonstrating maintained standard of competence in the past five years
