Core skills this course teaches

Provide basic first aid onboard a vessel
Develop the knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to first aid situations that may arise on a vessel.

Prepare vessel for slipway maintenance
Understand the preparation, precautions, and maintenance processes involved in slipping a vessel for survey and upkeep, according to Maritime NZ standards.

Operate and monitor vessel machinery and systems
Learn operation and procedures for marine vessel engines, drive train, propulsion, and auxiliary machinery, including watchkeeping duties.
What You're Signing Up For
This 12-week full-time programme prepares students for a career as a Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC 6) by equipping them with the practical skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment on commercial vessels. The course includes a blend of online and in-person study, simulator-based training, and first aid. Graduates generally work on commercial vessels such as trawlers, tug boats, ferries, or charter boats, and may progress to the Marine Engineer Class 6 certificate of competency from Maritime New Zealand.

What you need to know first
48 credits at NCEA Level 2 OR a relevant Level 3 or 4 maritime certificate or equivalent
Evidence of required English language proficiency for non-native speakers (IELTS 5.5 Academic or equivalent)
Medical Certificate (GP standard or seafarer-specific)
Recommendation: employment or engagement in the maritime industry
Physically fit and able to participate in practical training
