What You're Signing Up For

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology at AUT focuses on the practical application of engineering principles across a wide range of disciplines. It trains students in design, applied technology, teamwork, and creative problem solving, with opportunity for industry-based work experience. Graduates are eligible for Technical Membership of Engineering New Zealand, and the program is Sydney Accord accredited. Students select a major (Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering), receive broad foundational engineering education, and complete a 600-hour supervised work placement.

  • Fundamentals of engineering design and problem solving
  • Applied technology and sustainable design
  • Mathematics and physics for engineers
  • Specialist courses in chosen major (Electrical & Electronic or Mechanical Engineering)
  • Workplace experience: minimum 600 hours industry-based project
  • Ethical and creative problem-solving in engineering
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills for engineers
  • Courses shared with Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Year 1

What you need to know first

University Entrance or equivalent

NCEA: 14 credits or more at Level 2 or above in Mathematics (including AS91261 and AS91262) or NCEA Level 3 Maths/Stats/Calculus and 14 credits or more at Level 2 or above in Physics

CIE: D grade or better in Mathematics and Physics at AS level

IB: Level 4 (or better) in both Mathematics and Physics

Alternative: Completed/partially completed NZ Diploma in Engineering or National Diploma in Engineering, or other recognised certificate with required Maths and Physics

IELTS (Academic) 6.0 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher, or equivalent (for international students)
