What You're Signing Up For

The Bachelor of Nursing Māori is designed to support students' development as culturally competent and clinically skilled nurses, equipped to serve Māori and other communities. Integrating Māori worldviews with nursing theory and practice, the three-year programme includes blended learning, extensive clinical placements, and a focus on both personal and professional growth, ultimately enabling graduates to sit the State Final Examination for registration as a Registered Nurse.

Course Content

  • Kaupapa Māori curriculum framework (Te Pae Mahutonga) and tenets: Kaitiakitanga, Manaakitanga, Pūkengatanga, Rangātiratanga, Whānaungātanga
  • Year 1: Whakapapa, identity, belonging, nursing skills for healthy people, assessing home environments
  • Year 2: Enhanced nursing capability, child and whānau health, mental health, disability, community care, expanded clinical skills
  • Year 3: Transition to professional nursing practice, clinical placements in Māori and general health contexts
  • Blended learning: face-to-face, online through Moodle, lectures, workshops, simulation suite training
  • A minimum of 1,100 hours of clinical experience (praxis)
  • Independent study, study teams, assignments
  • Preparation for State Final Examination for Nursing Council NZ

University Entrance or equivalent

May consider overseas high school studies or relevant recent Level 4 tertiary study with B average and/or work experience (case-by-case)

Interview to assess readiness for study and registration suitability

Children’s Act (2014) safety check including reference and police check

Relevant supplementary application documents and referee report

Health screening and verified immunisation records
