What You're Signing Up For

This Competency Assessment Programme is designed for New Zealand qualified Registered Nurses who have been out of practice for five years or more and wish to return to contemporary nursing. The ten-week course offers a mix of theoretical learning (including simulated applied learning) and clinical placement in acute, primary, or aged care settings. Successful completion enables participants to apply for renewal of their annual practising certificate as a Registered Nurse.

Course Content

  • Six weeks of theoretical study on contemporary nursing in New Zealand
  • Applied learning at Waitākere Hospital’s Simulation Lab
  • Six weeks of clinical practice placement (acute, primary, or aged care facilities)
  • Preparation for renewal of annual practising certificate
  • Health screening and fitness to practice requirements
  • Safety checks (including police vetting and declaration requirements)
  • Immunisation and medical certification
  • Professional standards and ethics for return to nursing

What you need to know first

New Zealand qualified Registered Nurse

Evidence of employment as a Registered Nurse for at least one year

Written recommendation from the Nursing Council of New Zealand outlining requirement to complete a CAP programme (within last 12 months)

Certified copies of two forms of ID

Self-declaration of criminal conviction(s) and medical condition(s)

Consent to NZ police vetting check

Two referees for safety check

Police clearance from countries lived in other than NZ

Completed health screening, immune status, and medical declaration of fitness to practice (signed by a doctor)

If English is not first language, evidence of English language proficiency

Valid Level 2 First Aid certificate (by week 5 of course)
