What You're Signing Up For
The Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Institute of Technology prepares students for a diverse and rewarding nursing career. The programme emphasises the combination of academic knowledge, practical clinical experience, and the development of essential skills for compassionate, competent, and safe practice within health care. Students engage in a variety of clinical settings, developing specialised and generalist nursing capabilities with a strong commitment to cultural competence, health promotion, and evidence-based practice. The programme enables graduates to sit for the Nursing Council of New Zealand's registration exam and pursue advanced studies.
Course Content
- Year 1: Professional Issues in Nursing, Primary Health and Health Promotion, Fundamentals of the Art and Science of Nursing Practice, Health and Social Sciences 1, Health Sciences 1, 200 hours practicum
- Year 2: Professional Issues in Nursing 2, The Art and Science of Nursing Practice, Health and Social Sciences 2, Health Sciences 2, 430 hours practicum
- Year 3: Leadership and Professional Issues in Nursing, The Art and Science of Nursing in Acute Settings, The Art and Science of Nursing in Mental Health Settings, The Art and Science of Nursing Practice (Transition to Graduand), 880 hours practicum
- Topics include: health promotion, illness prevention, evidence-based practice, acute and chronic nursing care, mental health nursing, leadership, primary care, partnership, cultural safety, and research.
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 3 with 14 credits in three approved subjects, preferably Science, Mathematics, and English
Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above (5 in reading, 5 in writing)
Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above
Overseas equivalent qualification may be accepted
Mature applicants (age 20+) with evidence of academic ability (e.g. Level 4 science-based qualification in past 5 years)
English language proficiency: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.5) or OET with a C+ band/score in all sections (required for non-native English speakers)
Interview may be required
COVID-19 vaccinations highly recommended for placements
