Register as a competent nurse in Aotearoa

What You're Signing Up For
Puawānanga Tapuhi Māori (Bachelor of Nursing Māori) at NorthTec is an NZQA Level 7 degree that integrates Mātauranga Māori and evidence-based practices into nursing education. The programme aims to produce competent registered nurses prepared to work in diverse healthcare settings. It emphasises Te Tiriti o Waitangi, health equity, and cultural safety in nursing practice, and includes substantial clinical placements in Northland. Learning is delivered through a blend of face-to-face, online, and marae-based teaching, grounded in Māori pedagogies. Graduates will be ready for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and employment across the health sector.

- Wānanga (discussion-based knowledge building)
- Noho marae (marae-based educational experiences)
- Taukana-Teina mentoring
- Blended classroom and online learning
- Clinical placements in Northland across multiple health settings
- Year 1 courses: Whānautanga, Tiaki Whānau, Te Ture me te Tikanga, Mana Atua, Oranga Whānau, Te Tiriti o Waitangi me Kawa Whakaruruhau, Mana Tangata, Manaaki i te Tangata
- Year 2 courses: Whakawhanaunga, Mahi ā-Ringa Tuatahi, Mana o Rongo, Hauora Whānui, Whakamahia te Ture me te Tikanga, Mahi ā-Ringa Tuarua
- Year 3 courses: Tātai Hono, Mahi ā-Ringa Tuatoru, Whakamana te Ture me te Tikanga, Whiringa ā-Mahi
- Simulated practice and rostered clinical learning experiences
- Online learning content and weekly assessment requirements
What you need to know first
Be at least 16 years old at programme commencement.
Meet minimum academic pathway (New Zealand University Entrance) OR successful completion of an approved Health qualification at Level 4+ OR a recognised equivalent.
Able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level.
Physically able to complete programme-specific outcomes.
For applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS score of 6.5 (no band below 6.5) or accepted international equivalence.
Health clearances, immunisations, and vaccination evidence required if accepted.
Two referees.
NZ Police vetting (for clinical placements).
