Students will be able to assess various emergency scenarios to determine appropriate first aid responses.

Students will learn to administer treatment for resuscitation and choking for adults, children and infants, as well as manage bleeding, shock, fractures, sprains, and head injuries.

What You're Signing Up For

This two-day course equips students with skills to provide first aid in workplace emergencies, including assessment and treatment of a variety of injuries and medical emergencies. It includes unit standards on managing first aid in emergency situations, providing first aid, and basic life support. Successful completion enables students to respond effectively in emergencies, perform resuscitation, treat wounds and fractures, and use a defibrillator.

  • Unit 6400 Manage first aid in an emergency situation
  • Unit 6401 Provide first aid
  • Unit 6402 Provide basic life support
  • Assess emergency situations
  • Provide basic first aid treatment including adult, child and infant resuscitation and choking
  • Handle bleeding, shock, fractures, sprains, head injuries
  • Treat hypothermia, burns and poisoning
  • Manage medical emergencies such as asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
  • Use a Defibrillator (AED)
  • Manage complex medical and traumatic emergency care situations

New Zealand citizen or resident

16 years of age or over

Not a full-time secondary school student (exceptions apply with approvals)
