What You're Signing Up For

This programme equips you to become a light automotive engineer. You will gain the knowledge and skills required to diagnose and repair faults commonly encountered on light vehicles including cars, light commercial vehicles, and light trailers. The course is structured through on-the-job learning for managed apprentices, alongside teacher-directed learning and optional workshops in various locations. Graduates will be able to apply workplace safety, precautionary servicing for high-risk systems, and repair faults across engines, drivelines, electrical, steering, and suspension.

  • On-the-job practical training in an automotive workshop
  • Teacher-directed underpinning knowledge
  • Optional local workshops and regional support

What you need to know first

At least 16 years old at the time the programme commences

Must be physically able to complete programme outcomes

Must demonstrate basic English reading, writing, and communication skills

Successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) or equivalent knowledge and skills

Employed in an automotive workplace operating at a commercially acceptable industry standard (for managed apprenticeships)

IELTS Academic score of 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0 (or accepted international equivalence) if English is not the first language
