The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Otago offers a rigorous education in legal systems, critical thinking, research, and advocacy. The programme is the foundation for practising law in New Zealand, and its graduates are sought after in many sectors including law, government, business, policy, and more. Students will develop strong analytical and communication skills and have the opportunity to tailor electives to their interests, including areas such as environmental law, health policy, tech regulation, and human rights. Course Content

  • Legal analysis and thinking
  • Core 100- and 200-level LAWS papers (e.g. LAWS 101, LAWS 201-204, LAWS 298)
  • Legal writing and research skills (LAWS 298, LAWS 398, LAWS 498)
  • Advocacy skills (LAWS 499)
  • Advanced electives such as environmental law, tech regulation, human rights, and more
  • Research and writing in law
  • Combination with other disciplines (e.g., Science, Commerce, Arts)

What you need to know first

Admission to the second year is limited to eligible New Zealand citizens or residents.

Completion of LAWS 101 and further papers (at least 72 points) from another degree.

Selection criteria by Law Admissions Committee based on academic record, with alternative entry for Māori applicants.
