What You're Signing Up For

The Diploma in Languages at the University of Canterbury is designed for those interested in learning or furthering their skills in languages and culture. This flexible qualification can be taken alongside another degree or as a stand-alone qualification. Students choose from a range of language courses and related non-language courses such as cultural and historical studies. The diploma enables graduates to gain significant language proficiency and cross-cultural awareness, increasing employability in many sectors such as government, international business, tourism, and education.

Course Content

  • Study of one or two languages
  • Language acquisition at multiple levels
  • Courses in culture and history related to chosen languages
  • 120 points of coursework, with at least 60 points in languages above 100-level
  • Option for non-language courses if only one language is studied
  • Languages available: Ancient Greek, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish, Te Reo Māori
