What You're Signing Up For

These night classes introduce participants to te reo Māori, providing an authentic learning experience from beginner to full immersion levels. Courses are held in the evenings over 10 weeks at Unitec's Mt Albert and Waitākere campuses and are free for domestic students. Learners explore basic to advanced language skills, cultural concepts, oral traditions, and tikanga Māori in a supportive environment guided by experienced lecturers.

Course Content

  • Introduction to te reo Māori: personal introductions, mihimihi, karakia, waiata
  • Pronunciation: vowels, consonants, diphthongs, blends, correct pronunciation
  • Language structures: basic and complex sentence formation
  • Vocabulary development: everyday words and cultural terms
  • Punctuation, syntax, and tenses (past, present, future)
  • Pepeha and whakapapa (personal and ancestral connections)
  • Conversational skills: oral communication and discussions
  • Cultural practices: tikanga Māori, marae experience, rituals
  • Advanced immersion: mōteatea (traditional chants), karakia for different settings

Must be a New Zealand citizen or resident (submit certified proof at application).
