What You're Signing Up For
This diploma programme provides an immersive environment to further develop te reo Māori proficiency, focusing on grammar, conversation, dialects, and cultural context. Students enhance their language skills through face-to-face classes and weekend immersions, with an emphasis on using te reo Māori as their principal means of communication. The programme also covers tikanga (customs), Māori perspectives, and research skills, enabling graduates to use advanced sentence structures, participate in meaningful conversations, and contribute to the revitalisation of te reo Māori.

- Intermediate level conversational te reo Māori
- Regional variations of language
- Understanding and using different dialects
- Grammar and sentence structures (including passive and stative forms)
- Kiwaha (idioms) and whakatauki (proverbs)
- Cultural contexts and applications (e.g., marae protocol, land, people, history)
- Modules: Hokinga Mahara, Nga Ahuatanga o te Reo, Korero Nehe, Te Taiao, Te Hekenga o Nga Waka, Whakapurongo, Kupu Whakanikoniko, Te Marae
What you need to know first
Be 16 years of age or over
Successfully completed NZ 3046 Te Reo Māori Level 4 Qualification or equivalent
Able to satisfactorily complete a Level 5 PEA assessment
Attendance at information hui with kaiako
