What You're Signing Up For
This Level 3 programme develops your Te Reo Māori language skills by taking you beyond basic knowledge and into intermediate language structures and cultural understanding. You'll gain increased confidence through bilingual, interactive learning, exploring active and passive sentence structures, vocabulary, tenses, and Māori cultural practices, including waiata and karakia. The course is the first part of a learning pathway progressing to higher-level immersion and the Level 4 certificate.
Course Content
- Active and passive sentence structures
- Tense markers for present, past, and future actions
- Extending Māori vocabulary
- Differentiating Māori and non-Māori sentence structures
- Using te reo Māori in formal and informal situations
- Explaining and practicing tikanga Māori
- Learning and performing waiata and karakia
- Giving instructions and responding using passive commands
- Understanding postposed periphery particles in te reo Māori (pea, tonu anō, kē)
- Constructing negative action sentences
What you need to know first
Minimum age 16 at course start (unless exempted from school by the Ministry of Education or principal)
Should have little or no knowledge of Te Reo Māori
Must attend an information sharing hui with a Kaiako (teacher) before enrolment
