What You're Signing Up For
This certificate provides learners with the skills to understand main points and some specific details of moderately complex oral and written texts on familiar academic topics, participate confidently in sustained spoken discourse, and write clear, connected texts in an academic context. Students will develop the English language proficiency necessary for academic participation and workplace communication in New Zealand. Entry requires basic English skills or equivalent qualifications, with additional criteria for non-native speakers. The programme is delivered online with regional support and optional local workshops. It is not open to international students. The course provides pathways to higher English qualifications and other level 4 study and training programs.
Course Content

- Writing clear, connected texts on reasonably familiar academic topics
- Building general English language skills for academic and workplace environments
- Completing programme-specific outcomes requiring physical ability
What you need to know first
Be at least 16 years old at programme commencement
Basic English reading, writing and communication skills
Physical ability to complete programme outcomes
IELTS score of 5.5 with no band less than 5, or accepted international equivalence for non-native English speakers
Successful completion of NZ Certificate in English Language (General) Level 3, or equivalent CEFR B1 High level
Completion of NorthTec internal language placement test if using VITAL CEFR High B1 evidence
