Core skills this course teaches

Basic Mandarin conversational skills
Be able to engage in simple spoken conversations in Mandarin Chinese using common phrases and expressions.

Understand and apply basic pronunciation and tones
Recognize and use pinyin, tones, and proper pronunciation in basic verbal communication.

Introduction to reading and writing Chinese characters
Read and write a selection of simple Chinese characters in context.
What You're Signing Up For
This introductory, beginner-level course is designed for anyone interested in learning Chinese language and culture. No prior experience in Chinese is needed. Over one term, you will learn basic Chinese language skills in a supportive, evening-class environment. The course prepares students to progress to the next level (Beginners 2).

What you need to know first
No experience necessary. Open to anyone 16 years or older.
Full-time secondary students must attend outside school hours and have school principal approval.
