What You're Signing Up For

Te Whakangungutanga ki Ngā Tāiro a Kupe | Bachelor of Arts (Māori) at Eastern Institute of Technology is a full-time three-year programme enhancing students' proficiency in te reo Māori and tikanga. It prepares learners for diverse professional roles in government, education, media, and iwi liaison while contributing to revitalisation of indigenous Māori language and culture. Entry requires relevant prior qualifications or mature admission with an interview process. Graduates can progress to the one-year full-time Honours programme or Masters studies.

  • Proficiency development in Māori language (te reo Māori)
  • Study of Māori customs and tikanga
  • Career preparation for roles in government departments, hospital boards, teaching from kōhanga to adult education
  • Work with local iwi as liaison or policy advisor
  • Skills for media roles like report writing, scriptwriting, announcing, and bilingual research

What you need to know first

Personal interview as part of application process

Minimum 42 credits at Level 3 NQF, including required literacy credits in English or Te Reo Māori

Or 75 Level 2 NCEA credits in one year in best 4 subjects

OR NZ Certificate in Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga Level 4 or equivalent

Mature entry for applicants over 20 with relevant knowledge and experience

Special admission for school leavers demonstrating capability

Provisional part-time admission for limited first year course study
