What You're Signing Up For

This NZTA approved training course provides the essential theory and practical skills needed to gain your Class 4 heavy vehicle licence for rigid vehicles over 18,000kg. The programme covers road user law, fatigue management, and legal requirements for logbook recording. Upon completion, you receive a course certificate and then need to visit a licensing agent to have the new class added to your licence.

  • Unit Standard 17576 – operate a heavy rigid motor vehicle for a Class 4 licence

What you need to know first

Minimum age: 16 years old at time of programme commencement

Able to read, write, communicate, and follow instructions in English at a basic level

Physically able to complete programme-specific outcomes

Minimum current full Class 2 driver licence held for at least 6 months (or 3 months if over 25)

Current Class 4 learners licence

Approved drivers log book

IELTS score of 5.5 (no band lower than 5), or accepted international equivalence (for applicants whose English is not a first language)
