Core skills this course teaches

Comprehensive viticulture and wine science understanding
Gain knowledge of grape growing and winemaking, including understanding grape varieties, suitable growing environments, and the science and art of making wine.

Practical industry experience
Develop hands-on skills with work experience in vineyards and wineries, participating in a commercial vintage and research project directly linked to the wine industry.

Application of business and management skills
Learn essential business practices, people management, and wine marketing relevant to the running of vineyards and wineries.
What You're Signing Up For
This three-year degree delivers comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in viticulture and wine science. You'll study grape varieties, soils and environments, winemaking processes, business management, and sustainability. Students engage with the local wine industry, undertake hands-on work in vineyards and wineries, and complete a research project. Flexible study options are available, including full-time on-campus or part-time distance learning. The degree also prepares graduates for a variety of roles in viticulture and winemaking, as well as for further postgraduate studies.

- Viticulture science: grape varieties, vineyard management, soils and environments
- Wine science: oenology, winemaking processes, wine chemistry, wine microbiology
- Business skills: vineyard and winery management, wine marketing, people management
- Sustainability in viticulture and wine production
- Industry-based learning: vineyard work, commercial vintage, research project
- Use of industry technology and latest research
- Hands-on experience: tractor driving, first aid, forklift license
- Off-campus experiential learning in local vineyards and a campus winery
- Distance learning requirements and residential school attendance
What you need to know first
University Entrance or equivalent qualification
Applicants must be 18 years or older on 1 February of entry year (provisional entry possible under 18)
Strongly recommended: At least 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 in Chemistry and in Mathematics
English language proficiency: IELTS 6.0 Academic (no band below 5.5) or equivalent (for non-native speakers)
