What You're Signing Up For

This course prepares students for crewing on commercial fishing vessels, providing safety, operational, and practical seamanship skills necessary for deckhand roles. The internationally-recognised qualification leads to enhanced employment in fishing operations and qualifies graduates for the Maritime NZ Advanced Deckhand - Fishing endorsement (ADH-F). Training encompasses safe and sustainable work practices, vessel operations, communication, navigation support, vessel construction, and seafaring skills.

  • Safe and sustainable working practices
  • Effective on-board communication and relationships
  • Basic safety training: survival, fire prevention, emergency procedures, first aid, pollution and accident prevention
  • Operational factors affecting vessel and crew safety
  • Nautical terminology and commands for fishing operations
  • Deck appliance handling and maintenance
  • Personal conduct and use of protective equipment
  • Watchkeeping and navigation support duties
  • Fishing vessel construction, stability, and seaworthiness
  • Seamanship: rope splicing, mooring operations, anchoring and towing procedures

What you need to know first

Open entry (no minimum academic requirements)

Preference given to applicants with New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 2)

Preference given to those employed or seeking employment on aquaculture/commercial fishing vessels

For non-native English speakers: NZ Certificate in English Language Level 3 or IELTS 5.0 (no band lower than 5), or meets NZQA English proficiency outcomes
